A Formal Feeling

Emily Dickinson

I don’t know if I mentioned this before, but I’m currently studying poetry; one classic author that stands out to me is Emily Dickinson. Below is one of my favorite poems by her. I think that, like some of the biographies written about her, it exemplifies the eternal mystery of her. What pain does she speak of at the time she wrote this? Was it the loss of a family member or perhaps a lover? Was it a metaphor for another kind of loss…career…hopes…dreams…or something as simple (yet morose) as the loss of time? Reading her poems, I find elements that I can relate to and if I close my eyes and recite the verses, I can see Dickinson at her desk penning them. Can you? || Read more
